"With pastels, the main thing I want to find is a sense of "interesting light". I was always attracted to the work of Vermeer, Rothko and Rembrandt, because of their unique light quality. I stylize a bit in order to draw only the things that intrigue me. Technically, I work on a thin print paper that gets a bit of texture as I rub layer after layer of color onto it with my fingertips. No brushes or tools are used. The effect is often a soft, ill-defined edge, which I prefer.
