"When I work with pastel, the main thing I want to happen is a sense of interesting light. I was always attracted to the work of Vermeer, Rothko and Rembrandt, because of their unique light quality. I also try for simplicity, I stylize a bit in order to only draw the things I am interested in. The subject matter is anything I see that intrigues me. I work from a model, photographs, or nature. Technically, I work on a thin print paper that gets a bit of texture as I rub layer after layer of color onto it. The effect is often a soft, ill-defined edge, which I prefer."
